Nature's Way

Will, Zosia & I visited George & Marla out at Nature’s Way Organic Farm in August.  Marla led on a tour of the 6 acre farm and it was amazing.  There are rows & rows of blueberry plants much taller than myself.  It was truly  a 4 year old’s paradise.  Zosia with berry basket in hand filled her cheeks and basket to the brim that day.

This is Marla & George’s  8th  season on this farm.  The Blueberry plants are probably about 22 years old and will typically last about 50 years, although they add new plants every year.  They approximate that they have about 3700 blueberry plants consisting of  five different varieties. The berries that we purchase for our store our a blend of these varieties. 15 pickers manage their own section and several graders sort berries for wine or for retail sale.  It is quite the operation.

We currently reserve 1200 lbs a season of Nature’s Way’s blueberries & 800 lbs of strawberries for our freezer section.

Although blueberries are their largest crop, they also grow strawberries, garlic, tay berries, and few other small crops.  The blueberry season is short.  They usually start picking in the third week of July and finish mid to end of September, depending on the year.

Marla & George also have a winery called Blue Moon on their farm.  They specialize in fruit wines & ports all available for sale at their wine tasting room. Check there hours or call before you take the drive.  They have won several awards for their wines at the Northwest Wine Summit Competition & the All Canadian Wine Championships.

Also on the property is Tria culinary studio.  An intimate dining experience that is available for groups to reserve. They also offer monthly full moon dinners.  Guests eat together at a large table outside when the weather allows or in a cozy dining room that is open to the kitchen.  The focus of the menu is on local produce & businesses.
